Straight hair

With trends and styles constantly changing, straight hair is one of the few looks which will always be in style – whether you then leave your hair loose around your face or tie it into an on-trend updo. But achieving perfectly straight hair is not always easy, especially for those with naturally curly or frizzy hair.

That’s where this blog post comes in. As well as spotlighting some of our top tools and products, including the classic GHD Gold Styler and the top of the range GHD Platinum+ Styler this blog post shares 6 top tips for achieving perfectly straight hair that lasts all day.

1. Make sure your hair is dry first

You may have noticed that when you get your hair cut and styled, the stylist will spend a lot of time blow drying your hair. This is because styling – and especially straightening – wet hair is a recipe for damage and disaster, which in the worst cases can lead to hair literally falling out into your hands. So with this in mind, it’s important to ensure that your hair is dry before attempting to straighten it.

If you have curly or particularly bouncy hair, drying your hair with a hairdryer can help to remove some of its naturally kinks and leave you with a sleek and smooth canvas to start straightening on. If your hair is straight, air drying is the best option to help keep your hair in top condition – removing the need for unnecessary heated tools and instead giving your hair chance to dry in its natural state before styling.

2. Use a fine tooth comb when straightening

Straightening can take a fair chunk of time, especially when your hair is not naturally straight and so needs to be done in very small sections. Not only does this help you to achieve the desired look, but it also means you achieve that perfection without running the straightening iron over your hair multiple times. Using a fine tooth comb will allow each strand of hair to be separated and therefore become effectively straightened – with our advice being to run the comb through dry and brushed hair before straightening to unhook any kinks.

3. Avoid oil-based treatments

They may say ‘thermal protectant’ on the label, but oil-based treatments and products can actually cause lasting damage to your hair in the long run, by burning the oil which has been absorbed into your hair. Despite this, using a thermal protector is important if you regularly straighten and treat your hair with heated tools, so make sure to replace those oil-based products with something more natural like a protecting spray.

4. Use a fine mist of hairspray before straightening

Fine mist hair spray

This may seem counter intuitive but spraying a fine mist of hairspray over your hair before straightening can help to keep your hair sleek and straight for longer – holding frizz at bay and giving you that salon-professional finish all day long. It is important that you find the right hairspray for this job as some can leave your hair crispy – you want something lightweight with a gentle hold.

5. Make sure your hair is in tip top condition

Straightening and using other heating tools can be bad for the health of your hair, if you carry out the procedure in the wrong way. That’s why it’s important to not only use all the right tools and products during straightening itself, but to keep your hair in healthy condition before and after styling too, so that you always have a near-perfect canvas to work on. Coconut oil is a great TLC treatment for hair, and keeping your hair protected from the sun is also important to remember (even when it’s not hot and sunny).

6. Employ a consistent technique

Rather than doing a rush-job, make sure that if you decide to straighten your hair you do so with a consistent technique – running from the roots down to the ends of your hair. This will help you to achieve that salon-perfect finish and will become second nature as part of your styling routine with practice.

All of the above tips can help you to not only achieve perfectly straight hair but ensure that your hair stays heathy and in good condition before, during, and after straightening. For more information on the best tools for styling, head to our hair straighteners product page.
