Located just outside of Newcastle, you will find a vibrant hub of activity and culture – bringing together innovative design and experiences with hints of the area’s history and prominence in Northern industry.

Yes, in this article we are talking about Ouseburn – popular with locals, tourists and university students alike, as a place where live music brings the streets to life all day and well into the night.

An introduction to Ouseburn

Named by Time Out as the 29th coolest neighbourhood in the world, Ouseburn is small but mighty – with innovation and regeneration led by the community itself as the area strives to become a hub of both culture and entertainment. Now recognised as a great place to go for a day out or a night out, Ouseburn is just a short walk from the centre of Newcastle and offers students a vibe unlike anything they might find in the city itself.

As well as the many quirky venues for drinking, dancing, and live music, Ouseburn is also a lively place to visit in the daytime with a selection of attractions including Ouseburn Farm, the Glasshouse Bridge, and Seven Stories National Centre for Children’s Books (perfect for the literary students among you).

If, however, you are only here for the drinks and dining opportunities, then keep reading – we’re about to share a look at some of Ouseburn’s best places to eat and drink.

Getting around

Just a 20 minute walk from Newcastle city centre, Ouseburn is also easily accessible via Metro or of course by taxi if you want quick and immediate transport, or you can hop on your bike and enjoy the quayside path as you follow the river down to the centre of Ouseburn.

Once there, you will find that most of the top attractions and destinations in Ouseburn are located within close proximity of each other. Here are some of our favourite places to look out for and try on you next night out…

Bars, pubs and restaurants

From daytime dining to night drinking, our pick of top bars, pubs, and restaurants in Ouseburn combine the lively with the family friendly and everything in between.

  • The Cluny, an independent music venue which holds about 300 and is an evening venue synonymous with local gigs and music nights. This venue offers a bit of everything so make sure to check it out and see who’s scheduled to play next.
  • The Ship Inn, a homely pub with the best Sunday roast for those lazy days where you fancy a walk with friends and a roast dinner at the end. As well as being home to a relaxed vibe, this pub has a largely vegan menu which makes it super popular with students and visitors from all over.
  • Tyne Bar, a popular bar with an outside beer garden complete with a stage for all those acoustic music sessions with your old and new favourite artists. This venue is particularly popular with students thanks to its affordable menu and great portions.
  • Tyne Bank Brewery, established in bars across Newcastle and beyond, the Tyne Bank beer is probably one you’ve tried before – but there’s nothing quite like enjoying a beer in the very place where it was created. Enjoy an authentic Tyne Bank beer at the brewery itself, or you can book onto a tour and really immerse yourself in the process of making and bottling great beer.
