ghd Platinum+ Review

ghd Platinum+ review

Regular customers and clients will know that we go out of our way to test, trial, and review new and innovative products on the haircare and styling market – telling you all you need to know about the product, the user experience, and whether or not we would recommend it.

This time, it’s the turn of the ghd Platinum+, a so-called smart straightener which promises optimum heat styling by automatically recognising the thickness of your hair and adjusting the heat and power supply needed to smooth and straighten every strand.

But first, a little about the product and how it works.

How the ghd Platinum+ works

The Platinum+ is a straightening iron which is super sleek in design, with the thin and lightweight arms of the tool rounded for maximum smoothness whether creating dead straight hair or something akin to a soft wave. The tool is operated via a button and features an automated off switch which kicks in after 30 minutes of inactivity.

Other features include a wishbone style connection at the wired end of the straighteners, which facilitate a much smoother opening and closing motion, and which make the tools much more comfortable to use.

But of course, the main thing that readers want to know about is the tool’s ability to heat and style the hair – so let’s get into it.

The benefits of the ghd Platinum+ and what we love about it

ghd Platinum+ close up

We cannot argue with the capability of any ghd tool to get the job done – ghd products are known for being quality – but these straighteners truly go above and beyond. They are lightweight and streamlined in design, yet the integration of predictive technology sensors means that the straighteners can seemingly assess the thickness of your hair and adjust the power settings to deliver the optimum heat accordingly.

The button itself is integrated into the design of the tool and is a rounded touch button rather than a switch – illuminated by a white ring when the straightening irons have reached their top temperature. The irons are designed to reach a heat of 185 degrees celsius which, while not adjustable, is then balanced by the predictive power – ensuring that your hair will not burn while between the irons. It’s worth noting that 185°C is the temperature that all their stylers reach and is the optimal temperature, according to ghd.

From a user perspective, the fact that the tool switches itself off after 30 minutes is great for those who often leave their straighteners on and forget to unplug them. But the main benefit lies in the results – with the ghd Platinum+ genuinely delivering some of the smoothest, sleekest results we’ve seen from a single stroke with a heated iron. Far from frizzy or in need of a top up stroke of two, these straighteners transformed a section of hair in one sweeping motion and delivered a lasting look which needed very little in the way of styling.

The rounded barrel also presents other benefits in terms of versatility. With such a sleek and rounded shape, the ghd Platinum+ tool lends itself to creating soft curls and waves as well as a poker straight style – making this the ultimate tool for those who want to create different styles everyday with ease and efficiency.

Finally, we love the design of these straighteners. They feel elite, have an impressive chrome grey hue to the heated irons inside the arms, and are available in a range of colours depending on how you feel and the style you want to emanate.

Considerations to make before purchasing

Of course, there is always a catch of some sort. In this case it’s the cost, with the Platinum+ tool coming in at a high price. Having said that, the cost of the various treatments you would need to retain the same level of frizz-free, sleek, and shiny hair is worth adding up as you might find that this long-lasting at-home tool is worth the investment.

The other thing to consider is that these straighteners are wired, and so are not as portable as some alternative models. Of course, portable and wireless often means less powerful – and with the Platinum+ you not only get power but adjustable power according to the thickness of your hair. So again, more a bump in the road than a real issue.

If you’re keen to see how these straighteners work for yourself or find out more about their value and the results you could achieve, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us or come into the salon for a chat.
