Haircare Tips for Men

Men's haircare

Haircare is a concept often overlooked by men, who assume that a quick trip to their favourite men’s hairdresser and a touch of gel for special occasions is enough to keep them going well into middle age and beyond.

But let’s be honest, not only is hair a major part of an individual’s look – it can also be highly indicative of their age and even their health. That’s why, as part of our commitment to clients, sharing tips on haircare for men and for women is something we will continue to do as we move further into Winter.

In this blog post, not only will we let you know what you can do to nurture and care for your hair – we will also share why haircare is so important as the seasons change and let you in on a few insider tips for achieving shiny, perfect hair every time.

The importance of haircare for men

First thing’s first, the haircare routines of men and women are wildly different in almost all circumstances – yet the hair itself is no different. Yes, the hormones are different, and the length of the hair may be different, but at the end of the day all hair requires the same attention and detail and care if you want to nurture and protect it.

That’s why if you’re a man and you want to keep a full head of hair for as long as possible, acting on these tips and working them into your routine, alongside regular trips to your men’s hairdresser, is key.

Tip 1: Keep your scalp clean with the right products

Have you ever noticed how in the women’s haircare market there is a product for virtually every hair type and colour? The same attention should be applied to men’s haircare – with our first tip being to focus on finding the right product for you.

For example, if you suffer from dandruff then you need a hydrating shampoo which also supports and cleanses the scalp; if you have long or thick hair, you need a cleansing shampoo which won’t strip away the natural oils in your hair.

Tip 2: Don’t wash your hair every day

If you have a short haircut, it’s super easy to apply a little product and give your hair a wash every day or every time you have a shower. However, when you over wash hair you strip it of the oils it needs to grow thick and healthily.

If you like to restyle your hair after every shower, consider just wetting it and then drying it after.

Tip 3: Use conditioner

It’s time for men to stop viewing conditioners as a women’s product, and instead revel in the product’s ability to nourish, hydrate, moisturise, and promote healthy hair growth well into middle age and beyond.

Conditioner does not need to be applied every day or even with every wash – instead, dedicate one or two washes per week to a thorough conditioning treatment, reinvigorating hair with healthy oils and giving it a protective sheen from external elements.

Tip 4: Pay attention to your face when selecting a style

Not every style will suit every face shape. Hair is one of the best accessories that you have at your disposal – whether you’re a man or a woman – but in order to really maximise its potential you need to pair your face shape with the best hair style for it.

Some tips from our professional men’s hairdressers regarding how to choose a style, include keeping your life goals and personality in mind, and matching the style with the kinds of activities that you frequently partake in. For example, if you work in a very formal environment then consider the impact of your hair style on your professional image – and if you are an athlete, look to keep hair short and practical to prevent it from falling into your eyes.

Another thing to consider when it comes to styling and caring for your hair is the texture and thickness of hair. Wavy and thick hair requires different product types and a different maintenance approach to frizzy hair, fine hair, or curly hair. Ask your hairdresser for advice on this.

Tip 5: Be adventurous!

Of course, this should be approached within reason and with an eye to your personality and life goals. But remember that hairstyles are temporary and can be changed at any time – so why not try something a little different in your haircare routine and see how it works for you?
