ghd Gold Styler Review

ghd Gold Styler review

ghd is, for many people, the go-to brand for hair styling tools – particularly for straighteners. Most ghd products become the latest gold standard in DIY and at-home hair styling as far as we’re concerned, and the ghd Gold is no different.

Released back in 2022, the ghd Gold entered the brand’s repertoire of products as somewhat of a middleman – more expensive than the cheaper styling tools but not quite at the same level as the ghd Platinum+. However, as soon as we got our hands on them and tried them, we found the ghd Gold straighteners to be incredibly reliable and suitable for all hair types – injecting life into full hair and helping to tame frizzy and curly locks.

Keep reading for a full lowdown on the ghd Gold Styler, including the things we love and a few things to consider before investing.

How do the ghd Gold straighteners work?

As has become a classic trait across most ghd straighteners, this tool boasts a rounded barrel which makes it just as effective as a curling tool as it is ideal for straightening the hair.

The heated plates boast some flex which means that they adjust to the amount of hair that you place between them during styling – facilitating greater control regardless of how large the section of hair you style in one go. What’s more, the heated plates are also fitted with dual heat technology which, in practice, means that the heat is consistent across the entire length of each plate, so that hair is styled at the same rate.

During use, the straighteners reach a heat of 185 degrees – which ghd claims is the optimal temperature for styling, and which the brand claims does not require any adjustment. Hence, we assume, the reason why most ghd tools come with one set temperature (after all, they do know best!)

The ghd Gold works at the press of a button, with a flashing light which remains solidly lit once they reach the right temperature. Users have positive things to say about the amount of time it takes to both heat up and to use, claiming it takes around 20 seconds from the press of the button until they’re full heated – with the technology and optimum temperature meaning that styling can be achieved quickly with excellent results.

Other features and things to note about the ghd Gold include the lightweight design which makes it easy to use and manipulate through the hair, and of course the sleek shape which provides definitive styling from flicked ends to perfect curls.

Benefits and things we love

Perhaps the leading benefit of this styling tool has to be the heated plates – which reach their optimum temperature in less than 20 seconds, and which boast the dual technology to deliver consistent heat with ease and convenience.

Not only do the plates do the job that they are designed to do, facilitating enough heat to style the hair with a dead straight or wavy finish depending on the user, but they are also built to deliver frizz-free styling. The finish for users across all hair types is typically both smooth and sleek, with built-in sensors ensuring that the heat remains consistent regardless of how much hair is styled at once.

The other benefit of the plates themselves, and something that cannot be understated, is the fact that ghd know what the ideal temperature for heat styling is, and never surpass or undercut it. This means that hair can be consistently and regularly styled without causing damage – something which competitor brands do by pushing those temperatures too high.

All of this technology and innovation, while still retaining the design of a tool which is simple and incredibly easy to use.

Things to consider before investing

Some people claim that the single temperature is a downside – however, for us this is simply a mark of ghd’s experience and knowledge as to the ideal temperature for styling. The lack of variation in temperature is not something that should be considered a drawback, but instead a benefit.

It is worth noting that the ghd Gold is not the cheapest tool on the market, however, the fact that it is just as well suited to curling as it is to straightening makes it a styling staple that we highly recommend to those with all hair types.
