Common Mistakes That Can Dry Out Your Hair

Dry hair causes

With everything from cold weather to over-styling causing a depletion in your hair’s natural moisture, it can often feel like you are working hard to fix your hair’s state rather than protect it and keep it looking its best (anyone else regular hair mask buyers?)

The fact is, there are plenty of haircare habits out there that do more harm than good – and in this blog post we’re going to uncover some of the most common ones and put a spotlight on a handful of the haircare products we stock that can help to support and maintain your hair.

Mistakes (and a few external factors) that are drying your hair

Over-washing

It’s a real pain when your social plans don’t match up to your hair washing schedule – however, if you get into a routine of over-washing your hair then not only will it continue to become greasy much more quickly, but it will also become damaged and start to lose some of its natural moisture and shine.

Washing a few days a week, with an interspersed appearance from dry shampoo, will help to keep hair fresh and stylish all year round.

Wrong products

The haircare aisle in shops and online has become overrun with different brands, all making different promises and appealing to different buyers. Knowing which products are genuinely suitable for your hair means recognising what kind of hair you have and matching its needs with the products available.

For example, very coarse hair requires more in the way of conditioning treatments, while fine hair may become overworked with too much conditioning.

Heat styling

We are often told that too much heat styling is bad for our hair – but with so many blogs and resources out there highlighting problems without any solutions, we thought it was time to address the problem and let you in on the solution. Heat protecting sprays are one venture you can try, or why not extend the lifespan of each style by using dry shampoo?

Cutting down your daily styling to a couple of times a week will make a massive difference.

Old towels

Old towels can dry out your hair

Yes, really! The older and more frayed your towels, the greater the friction caused between them and your hair when you towel dry – thus damaging the hair cuticle and impacting the hairs ability to self-moisturise.

Environmental stressors

This is one you can’t really control yourself, however there are things you can do to give your hair a new lease of life during the cold and dry winter seasons when hair is put under greater stress. Our collection of hair masks and leave-in conditioners outlined below are all great go-to’s when your hair needs a little extra TLC.

Not checking ingredients

If something is sat in the haircare aisle, then it’s easy to believe that it is there to help and support our hair – but there are products out there which do more harm than good thanks to the infusion of drying ingredients such as parabens and sulfates.

Far from helping your hair, these ingredients are definitely ones to be avoided!

Over-colouring outside of a salon

Over-colouring is never good for your hair, but when you’re achieving that colour with a box dye at home, the damage to your hair can fast become irreversible. That’s because box dyes contain preservatives which hold colour but dry your hair out, with most DIY hair dyers failing to put in place the proper moisture protecting elements in the process.

Rough-brushing

Last but not least, when you drag a hairbrush roughly through your hair, you are going to cause breakage and damage. Whether you achieve a smooth comb through patience and perseverance, or add a little hair oil to make the process easier, taking some time to protect your hair will see it looking far better, for far longer.
